If you qualify according to the requirements mentioned above, please prepare and send to this Consulate the following documents:

  • An authenticated copy of your passport. In order to do that, you must declare before a local Notary Public (closest to your residence) that this is a true copy of your passport. Subsequently the signature of the Notary Public will be authenticated at this Consulate. Consular fee: $20.00

  • A certified copy of your birth certificate and of your marriage certificate (if married).

  • Please ask us where to send these documents for consular authentication in case they were not issued in the jurisdiction of the Brazilian Consulate in San Francisco. Consular fee: $20.00 per consular authentication.

  • A non-criminal record, issued by the Police Department at your city of  residence. Consular fee: $20.00 per document.

  • Proof that you have lived in the jurisdiction of the Brazilian Consulate in San Francisco for the last year.

  • A notarized letter from the institution responsible for the payment of  your retirement pension. Consular fee: $20.00 per document.

  • A notarized declaration from your local Bank agency that will be in charge of transferring your allowance to your bank account in Brazil. Consular fee: $20.00.

  • The requirements listed above should not, in any way, be considered all-inclusive. This Consulate  reserves the right to apply additional requirements when they are deemed necessary.

Please note that:

I- The applicable consular fees for the legalization of documents will be charged when the documents are presented to the Consulate. All consular fees must be paid in cash or money order made out to the Brazilian Consulate. Please bring the exact amount. Personal checks will not be accepted.

II- Applicants should be prepared for a waiting period from 4 to 8 weeks before the Consulate can advise them whether the visa has been approved.

III- Once the visa is approved, the applicant will be called to the Consulate to have the visa issued. Applicants should bring the original passport, two recent photographs (no snapshots, please), fill out two visa application forms and pay a $200.00 visa fee. American passports holders will be charged an extra $130.00 non-refundable Visa Processing Fee. If the applicant does not come in person to the Consulate, there is another $10.00 absence fee. Payments must be in U.S. Postal money order made out to the Consulate General of Brazil. Personal checks and cash will not be accepted.

The visa must be used within 90 days from the date it was issued, meaning the applicant has to enter Brazil before the 90 days period is over, otherwise the visa expires. The applicant must register with the Brazilian Federal Police Department within 30 days after entering Brazil.

Please note that the retired visa implies that the applicant desires to reside permanently in Brazil. If the holder of a permanent visa, even after all registration procedures in Brazil have been completed, leave the country for more than two years in a row, the visa will expire, the Brazilian Alien Resident Card will automatically be revoked and the person will have to re-apply for a new permanent visa.
