NOTICE TO VISA APPLICANTS

Temporary Visas I are meant for non-Brazilian experts and authorities in particular fields of knowledge traveling to Brazil to make presentations at meetings, seminars or to engage in teaching, training, research and other specialized activities. This kind of visa can also apply to graduate or post-graduate students to pursue academic work in Brazil.

All Candidates for a Temporary Visa I, must present the following documents:
1. A passport (please make sure that your passport is valid at least six months past the date of arrival).
2. One Visa Application Form, duly filled out, dated and signed by the applicant.
3. Two photographs, passport size, color, front view, no head cover, off-white plain background, taken within the last six months.  Snapshots, copies and computer photos will not be accepted.
4. A) letter of invitation from the Brazilian sponsoring institution:
  • As applicable for activities under an international cooperation program signed by the Brazilian Government.

  • As applicable for programs of international organizations approved by the Brazilian Government.

  • As applicable for grant programs sponsored by the "Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq" and/or CAPES, FINEP or other state foundation operating in the research area.

B) Copy of the government decree (Portaria) issued by the Ministry of Science and Technology and published on the government gazette (Diário Oficial da União):

  • as applicable for activities of scientific and technological cooperation as long as it does not deal with research on live organisms.

5. A non-criminal record statement, issued by the Police Department of the applicant's city of residence

Applicants whose stay exceeds 90 days, will be required to present proof that they hold a research grant for the duration of their stay.

In some cases, visas will be issued only upon authorization from the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

NOTES:
a) Bearers of a Temporary Visa I must register with the Brazilian Federal Police Department (Delegacia de Estrangeiros) within 30 days from the date of arrival in Brazil.
b) Bearers of visas must enter Brazil no later than 90 days from the date of issuance of the visa.
c) Visa fee: $ 60.00. There is an additional $ 20.00 fee for a visa request not made in person by the applicant. Payments must be in U.S. Postal money order made out to the Consulate General of Brazil. Personal checks and cash will not be accepted.
d) In addition to the amounts indicated above, a non-refundable processing fee of $ 150.00 will be charged to all US passport holders in reciprocity for an identical fee paid by Brazilian citizens who apply for a visa to the USA. Payment must be in U.S. Postal money order made out to the Consulate General of Brazil. Personal checks and cash will not be accepted.
e) The International Immunization Certificate against yellow fever will only be required from international travelers coming from countries which pose a risk of international dissemination. Currently there are no countries posing such risk. (Please see FAQ 1402 at www.anvisa.gov.br). Nevertheless, yellow fever vaccination is recommended if applicant intends to visit one of the following regions in Brazil: Acre, Amapá, Amazonas, Federal District, Goiás, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Pará, Rondônia, Roraima, Tocantins.
f) As a general rule, the visas are ready in 5 (five) business days (excluding the day when applications are received by the Consulate). Some visas (depending on the applicant's nationality or personal status) may require a longer processing time. If the Consulate is busier than usual, the processing time for visas may be extended. The Consulate does not have an expedite fee. 
g)

The Consulate accepts only visa submissions brought in by the applicant in person or by a family member/third party properly identified and authorized by a document signed by the applicant(s).

h) Visa applicants must set up an individual appointment to deliver the visa applications previously filled out online.  The scheduling page offers you options of dates and time slots. i) Applicants who live in our jurisdiction and cannot come to the Consulate may wish to pay a visa service/visa agency to help them process their visa applications.  Information on visa services may be found at the Consulate's website at www.brazilsf.org.
