Missile Tests by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea

Issued on July 6, 2006

The Brazilian government received with great concern the news that missile tests were carried out by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on July 5, 2006 . While reiterating its position in favor of disarmament and nonproliferation of weapons of mass destruction, the Brazilian government condemns the action by Pyongyang , which adds additional tension to a regional situation that was already unstable due to the scant advances achieved in the negotiations concerning security on the Korean peninsula.

The Brazilian government calls on the DPRK to reestablish the missile test moratorium of 1999, reaffirmed in 2002, and return to the six-party negotiations with a constructive spirit. That mechanism represents an appropriate forum in which to achieve understandings that take into account, in a balanced manner, the security concerns of the States that participate in them, including the DPRK.

Brazil will continue to follow with close attention future developments related to the recent action by the Pyongyang government, maintaining the Brazilian position of supporting the diplomatic initiatives aimed at achieving a peaceful and lasting resolution of the issues on the Korean peninsula.
