Indonesia acquires 8
"Super Tucano" aircrafts from Embraer
Embraer has just closed the sale of eight “Super
Tucano” aircrafts, an advanced training and light
attack aircraft, to the Indonesian Air Force.
This is the third international sale contract of the
“Super Tucano” aircraft in 2009. In Brazil, 40 units
have already been sold this year. Out of the 177
units sold so far, 100 have already been delivered –
75 to the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) and 25 to
Colombia.
The contract information and the price agreed for
the units have not been published, but the basic
version of the aircraft costs about US$10 million.
The increase in sales of the “Super Tucano” should
improve the participation of the defense sector in
Embraer’s revenue. In 2008, for example, the
aircraft was responsible for more than half of the
defense sector's exports of the company, which
totalized US$504 million.
FAB receives royalties for the sale of the “Super
Tucano”, since they sponsored the development of the
aircraft. They have purchased 99 units, a contract
appraised to be worth $449.7 million Reals.
The sale of the Brazilian “Super Tucano” may see a
leap this year if the United States Air Force (USAF)
decides to purchase an initial lot of 100 units with
the possibility of reaching 200 units. The closing
of the deal depends on a cooperation agreement in
the defense sector between the governments of Brazil
and the USA that still needs to be formalized.
Embraer is participating in the USAF's public bid
for the purchase of 100 turboprop light attack
aircrafts. Embraer is considered the favorite by
defense sector specialists, because the “Super
Tucano” is the only model that has its operation
proven in action during antiwar missions in
Colombia.
In January, the Dominican Republic acquired eight
“Super Tucano” aircrafts and Ecuador, twenty-four.
In August 2008, Embraer sold 12 “Super Tucano” for
the Chilean Air Force (FACh). The first aircraft is
expected to be delivered on November 3rd.
In 2006, Colombia acquired 25 aircrafts, a US$235
million contract, representing the first
international sale of the “Super Tucano”.
